The Adriatic
General
The Adriatic coast is renowned for its long stretches of sandy beaches washed by clear blue sea, perfect for swimming, windsurfing or just lazing in the sun. Venice, known as “La Serenissima” or the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, is built on hundreds of tiny islands in a vast lagoon and linked by a maze of canals and tiny bridges. A must for any visitor to the region with pretty narrow streets and Renaissance palaces, there are many other towns and cities that should not be missed including Vicenza, Treviso and Ravenna.
Places to Visit
Treviso
An attractive medieval town with frescoed house façades and Venetian-style canals. Once a haven for poets, musicians, writers and architects, open-air theatre and concerts are still staged in the main square during high season.
Venice
Venice is packed with places to explore and admire. Climb the bell tower in Piazza San Marco for fantastic views of the city and lagoon. The city is best seen by taking a gondola around the labyrinth of canals, or by taking a waterbus down the magnificent Grand Canal, passing under the famous Rialto Bridge and taking in the hundreds of palaces that line the banks.
Comacchio
A charming medieval town with colourful fishermen’s houses and canals spanned by interesting bridges.
Ravenna
Famous for its Byzantine mosaics, this ancient Roman port is a peaceful town which still bears the riches accumulated as an imperial city. It is full of beautiful old palaces, courtyards and cloisters.
Ferrara
An impressive town with medieval palaces, spacious squares and a cathedral with a magnificent marble façade.
Bologna
Capital of the Emilia Romagna region and home to spaghetti bolognese. A fine old university town and the epicurean centre of Italy, south-west of Pomposa.
