General
The capital of France and a city remarkable for its art galleries and museums. The views are spectacular from the most famous of landmarks, the Eiffel Tower, soaring 984 feet above the city. Make time to visit Notre Dame Cathedral with its beautiful rose window, and the Sacré Cœur perched high on the hill of the artists’ quarter of Montmartre. Paris is easily explored by the excellent Metro system. There’s plenty to see and do outside of the city as well.
Places to Visit
Paris
See the sights from aboard a bâteau mouche along the River Seine, or climb the Eiffel Tower for panoramic views over the whole city. Enjoy the ambience of this cosmopolitan city, and admire the superb architecture - you should not miss the unique Pompidou Centre.
Giverny
The impressionist artist, Claude Monet, lived here from 1883 until his death. Visit his house and the beautiful water lily gardens which were the source of inspiration for many of his paintings.
Versailles
An impressive Royal palace with beautifully landscaped and ornate gardens, once home to Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. Visit the elegant Hall of Mirrors where the Treaty of Versailles was signed and the splendid private apartments of the King and Queen.
Compiègne
This historic town has picturesque streets lined with Tudor buildings and the imposing Royal Palace of Louis XIV. The Armistice Treaty of 1918 was signed in the Forest de Compiègne in a railway carriage similar to the one now there featuring a museum.
Fontainebleau
This elegant renaissance château dates back to the 16th century, and has pleasant landscaped gardens to explore. Napoleon’s apartments are still furnished as they would have been during his empire. The majestic Forest of Fontainebleau by the castle, once royal hunting ground, is ideal for walking or hiking.
Pierrefonds
An attractive lakeside village set on a commanding hilltop. Dominated by the huge 12th century Château de Pierrefonds, a fairytale castle with majestic towers and medieval fortress that was recreated in the 19th century on the orders of Napoleon III.
