Austria

General

Austria’s lush meadows and shimmering lakes, set in deep alpine valleys and framed by snowy peaks, make a wonderful setting for walking, cycling and exploring. The picturesque Tyrol is a land of rural alpine charm, dotted with immaculate colourful villages, houses with bright window boxes and unusual dome-shaped churches.

Places to Visit

Innsbruck
Capital city of the Tyrol, west of Zell am See, and an architectural delight, with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque town houses, all framed by mountains.

Salzburg
An historic walled city, famous as the home of Mozart and Beethoven and the location for ‘The Sound of Music’.

Kitzbühel
One of Austria’s oldest and best known ski resorts, set in a pretty, wooded valley surrounded by dramatic mountains.

Krimml Waterfalls
The largest waterfalls in Europe, with a drop of 1200 feet. The path twists and turns with many chances to stop and view the falls.

Kaprun
Set in a beautiful alpine valley and one of Austria’s largest ski areas, where it is possible to ski on the glacier all year round.

Saalfelden
A lively market town and summer resort situated at the foot of the Steinernes Meer, the dramatic ridge that divides Austria from Germany.

Family Attractions

St Léonard
From Susten visit the largest underground lake in Europe, and take a boat trip through grottos and caves.

Walking
The stunning scenery of these regions provides the ideal setting for a holiday for walking or hiking enthusiasts. We provide detailed walking notes at various sites describing walks in these picturesque regions.
