Ranged along the coast of the Istrian peninsula, Croatia offers many popular resorts made famous when this area was part of Yugoslavia. In fact, the entire Istrian peninsula was ruled from Venice for more than 400 years, and even today you will find a strong Italian influence in both the architecture and the cuisine of the region. It is also interesting to note that just about every town here has both a Slavic and an Italian name. For example, the main tourist towns of Porec and Rovinj are also known as Parenzo and Rovigno respectively. Both are picture postcard Venetian-style ports with horseshoe-shaped harbours on rocky headlands surrounded by the glistening waters of the Adriatic.
Places to Visit
Umag
A small town and harbour on the west coast of Croatia, Umag is bestknown for its plentiful wine cellars. It also has an exquisite and unusual location on a miniature peninsula adjoining a huge semi-circular bay.
Buje
The town and its surroundings are particularly attractive and offers a selection of gastronomic specialities as well as numerous wineries, which are connected by the so-called ‘wine roads.’
Venice
‘La Serenissima’ is connected to the Istrian coast by ferries from most major ports including Porec. The crossing is quick, affordable and not to be missed.

Plitvice Lakes National Park
This beautiful pocket of wooded
hills, a World Heritage site, encloses
16 turquoise lakes connected by many waterfalls and cascades, with bridges over the waters at many points along the 18km trail.
Euphrasian Basilica - Porec
The basilica, atrium, baptistery and
episcopal palace are outstanding
examples of religious architecture,
whilst the basilica itself combines
classical and Byzantine elements.
Cave Baredine
The cave is a
treasure chest of stalagmites,
stalactites and natural sculptures
created by water underground. A
guided tour takes you through the
highlights of the cave system in
around 45 minutes. The caves open
during July and August.
