“A verdant jewel set in an azure sea”… how else could we describe Sardinia?

A Mediterranean island with an almost tropical feel, Sardinia boasts seemingly endless pink and white beaches, lapped by translucent waters that are amongst the clearest in the Med. Not surprisingly, Sardinia is a haven for sun worshippers as well as watersports enthusiasts. Yet the sheer beauty of the Sardinian landscape also makes the island a nature lover’s delight.

Sardinia is an island of ancient structures, wonderful festivals and cultural treasures. Local olive oil and herbs play an important part in the island’s cuisine. Ocean-fresh seafood can be enjoyed in the coastal villages, resorts and towns. And pizzas and pasta, along with an appetising array of salamis are readily available. The Alghero region is particularly renowned for its wines and some excellent reds are produced here, while fruity white wines and sparkling varieties originate from Gallura. There’s also a thriving cork producing industry.

Part of Italy, yet with its own language and passionately-held customs, Sardinia offers a landscape with beauty and surprises at every turn. From huge flocks of pink flamingos, to mountainsides swathed with sweet-smelling herbs and shrubs, to the busy port of Villasimus with its winding boutique-lined streets, this island is the Mediterranean you thought had disappeared.

Festivals feature heavily in Sardinian culture and almost regardless of the month you visit, it’s likely that a colourful event will be taking place. In May, there’s the Festival of Sant’Efisio, centred around decorated ox carts. Sheep festivals occur in June. Horseracing takes place in the streets of Sedilo in July. And there’s a whole host of festivals in August, including a medieval festival and a festival of traditional costumes and folklore.

Places to visit

Porto Cervo

One of the smartest resorts on the Med, Porto Cervo really is the summertime playground of the rich and famous. You’ll find impressive yachts moored in the marina, a stunning yacht club, plus ample opportunities to shop for all those designer labels in the myriad of fashionable boutiques.

Posada

The old quarter of this pretty little town is perfect for an afternoon or evening stroll. Above Posada perches the Castello de Fava castle, which dates back to medieval times.

Cágliari

The capital of Sardinia, Cágliari (pronounced Calyari), is adjacent to superb beaches. There are also impressive salt flats that are popular with bird watchers. The old city is split into the following districts: Castello, Marina, Stampace and Villanova. The home of the cathedral, Baroque residences and numerous art shops, Castello was once the fortified heart of Cágliari. In the Marina area, you’ll find numerous cafés, bars and restaurants. The Stampace has winding streets and a fascinating botanical garden. Villanova is mainly a residential area.

Nora and the Roman Baths

The well-preserved Roman ruins at Nora are just about all you need to imagine what life on Sardinia must have been like in ancient times. Here, you’ll see carefully planned streets and the remains of what would once have been impressive houses, with many colourful mosaic floors still in place. The star attraction of your trip to Nora, however, will undoubtedly be the Sea Baths (Terme a Mare) and the public baths (Edificio Thermale), where the earlier inhabitants of Nora took advantage of the hot springs.

The Nuraghi Stones at Chia

Dating back to around 2000 BC, these conically shaped structures are thought to be the homes of an ancient people. There are many examples of Nuraghi structures dotted around the Sardinian landscape. Most amazingly, they are held in place through the careful positioning of each stone.

Beaches

Sardinia really does have the beaches to put many other Mediterranean resorts in the shade. In fact, whether you’re looking for watersports, family fun, peace and quiet or somewhere to be seen, you won’t be disappointed.

Arutas Beach
Over thousands of years, the Mediterranean has ground up the native marble rocks to create a beach that is several kilometres long and shimmers white in the sunshine.

Poetto Beach
This is the longest beach on the island and the place to be seen. The nearest beach to Cágliari, Poetto has lots of fashionable bars and restaurants adjacent to the sands.

Chia
This lovely long beach is popular with windsurfers and is also perfect for a lazy stroll or topping up your tan.

Cala Gonone
The towering peaks that fringe Cala Gonone make it a breathtaking setting for an afternoon spent sunbathing.

Porto Pino
This lovely, gently shelving beach is adjacent to the pretty fishing village that shares the same name.

Torregrande
A fantastic beach for families. The pine forests to the rear of the beach provide welcome shade.

Villasimius
This beautiful beach also has a saltwater lagoon. There are peaceful stretches as well as areas with convenient cafés.
