Holidays in Austria

Overview

The very fact you’re considering a Keycamp holiday in Austria means you’re looking for something wonderfully different – and this beautiful Alpine country simply won’t disappoint you.

Austria is a land of breathtaking massifs, crystal-clear lakes, long meandering rivers, rich green pastures, aromatic conifer forests and wonderful valleys carpeted, during spring and summer, with a profusion of wild flowers.

A region of rural Alpine charm, in the picturesque Tyrol you will find immaculate colourful villages, houses with bright window boxes and unusual dome-shaped churches.

Austria has no less than six national parks, and around 40 nature parks, each beautifully different in its own way and each providing visitors with the chance to experience and enjoy an inspiring panorama rich in flora and fauna. For lovers of the great outdoors, Austria is a haven for walking, hiking, mountain biking, exploring and bird watching. Over 1,000 lakes make Austria an angler’s and a watersport enthusiast’s dream. While the numerous rivers provide ample opportunities for rafting and canoeing, making it a fantastic destination for family adventure holidays. The country has hosted the Winter Olympics twice and is also a superb destination for snowboarding and skiing, with the ski slopes of Kaprun offering all-year-round snow.

But visit Austria for more than the countryside alone. This is a land of great cities with ornate cathedrals, exquisite statues, incredible fountains and picture-postcard buildings, not-to-mention a heady mix of Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles. Just a short drive south from Salzburg, you will find Sportcamp Woferlgut, the Keycamp parc close to the pretty lakeside resort of Zell Am See, with its awe-inspiring views.

Sportcamp Woferlgut is perfectly positioned for exploring much of the very best that Austria has to offer. The snow-capped peaks of the Tirolis are only a little way away, as is Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol and the proud host of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic Games.

Using Swiss motorways to get to your destination or during your holiday?
All vehicles using Swiss motorways must pay an annual tax of around 40 Swiss francs. There is an additional fee of around 40 Swiss francs for trailers and caravans. Vehicles must display a sticker (‘vignette’), which can be bought at the Swiss border crossings, or can be purchased in advance from Switzerland Tourism in London. It is advisable to obtain one in advance in order to avoid delays at the border. The ’vignette’ is valid for a whole calendar year and enables you to drive on any motorway and exit and re-enter the country as often as you like during this time without further charge. Credit cards are not accepted for payment of a vignette.

Places to visit

Zell Am See

Just three miles from the Keycamp parc Sportcamp Woferlgut, Zell Am See is a picture-postcard town on the western shore of the beautiful Alpine lake that shares its name. Surrounded by mountains, this pretty resort has a golf course, ice-rink, swimming pool and horse riding. It’s also a wonderful spot from which to embark on some lovely walks.

Innsbruck

Located west of Zell Am See, Innsbruck provides visitors with an incredible architectural delight, with exquisitely crafted Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque town houses, framed by the rugged mountain backdrop. For incredible views over the city, take a trip to the top of the 15th Century Stadtturm tower in the old town. Plus be sure to see the city’s Little Golden Roof and the exquisitely decorated Heblinghaus that many say looks more like a wedding cake than a building.

Places to visit

St Léonard

From Susten visit the largest underground lake in Europe, and take a boat trip through grottos and caves.

Walking

Austria’s breathtaking scenery provides the ideal setting for a holiday spent walking or hiking. Detailed walking notes are available at various Keycamp parcs. At Sportcamp Woferlgut, guided walks and cycling tours (bookable on parc) are available.

Krimml Falls

One of the most impressive natural spectacles in Austria, and with the steepest drop in Europe, at the Krimml Falls you can witness the immense roar and cascade as thousands of gallons of water drop 1200 feet to the valley below. The path to the falls provides plenty of opportunities to stop and view the deluge. Don’t forget your camera.

Places to visit

Salzburg

The home of Mozart and Beethoven, and the location for filming ‘The Sound of Music’, Salzburg proudly maintains its musical heritage with a fabulous summer festival (late July – August), comprising a series of concerts and performances. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city’s ‘old town’ is home to a magnificent cathedral and the 900-year-old Hohensalzburg that sits on a rocky promontory. (If you don’t fancy the climb, you can always take the funicular.)

Kitzbühel

A leading winter sports destination, Kitzbühel is one of Austria’s oldest and best-known ski resorts. It sits in a pretty, wooded valley surrounded by dramatic mountains. Once a medieval walled village, Kitzbühel is an elegant place to do some shopping and sightseeing. There is also a museum that tells the story of Kitzbühel’s past from a mining village to a modern ski resort.

Kaprun

The place for all-year-round skiing, Kaprun is a lovely, relaxed town nestling in a beautiful alpine valley and one of Austria’s largest ski areas. In the Kapruner Valley you will find ample opportunities for walking. The valley’s cable cars provide a wonderful way to view the snow-capped peaks.

Saalfelden

A favoured haunt of skiers in the winter, during the summer months this lively market town offers visitors a wide range of attractions and a wonderful old town centre to explore. Saalfelden is situated at the foot of the Steinernes Meer, the dramatic ridge that divides Austria from Germany.
