Ancient Brittany

Brittany is famous for its megalithic monuments which are scattered all over the region; the largest monument being the standing stones near Carnac. It is also renowned for its "calvaries" which are elaboratly carved sculptures found in the churchyards of the towns surrounding Carnac.

Brittany's medieval past can best be discovered at Quimper, its ancient capital.

Quimper is situated in the southwestern corner of Brittany and is a town with a charming, rustic atmosphere made even more quaint by the series of footbridges which span the rivers flowing through the town. Quimper boasts a magnificent gothic cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint-Corentin, which is the oldest Gothic structure in Lower Brittany.

To the west of the cathedrals are the pedestrianised streets of Vieux Quimper. Visitors can enjoy any number of bars and crêperies in this area as well as cultural sites such as museums and the Episcopal palace.
